(Notes as I complete my internship.)
Coming into my internship with eTrigue, I figured I’d be sending out emails, managing social network accounts, and doing other slightly repetitive, mindless tasks. That was what marketing looked like to me before this summer.
Now, however, I’ve learned that marketing encompasses so much more. A good marketer isn’t simply a jack of all trades. In fact, she is a master of all trades. During my internship, I learned that marketers do literally everything. Yes, there is repetitive work involved, like maintaining a clean prospect subscription and uploading relevant tweets to Hootsuite. But there is also challenging work involved, like writing blog posts, creating white papers and designing infographics.
In my opinion, content creation is the most difficult job of a marketer. It took me a lot of time to come up with ideas and to actually do something with them. This got me thinking about the marketing role. Shouldn’t a marketer be spending her time thinking of ideas instead of performing repetitive, mindless tasks? I can’t imagine how a small marketing team could do a good job without marketing automation.
I think a marketing automation platform like eTrigue’s DemandCenter really changes things for small marketing teams. It makes it easy to focus on getting results through efficient marketing campaigns and alerting sales people to interested prospects. Using the platform, marketers can create targeted email campaigns, customize landing pages and emails, and automate all the repetitive, mindless tasks that suck up so much of a marketer’s time or require help from other departments. It is so much more efficient than trying to master several different systems. This ultimately frees up time for the marketer to think about and implement ideas – which I think should be a marketer’s main job.
This summer at eTrigue changed my perception of marketing completely. There were a lot more moving parts involved than I initially expected. We all know that marketing is an incredibly important branch of a business and it makes sense for businesses to invest in tools such as marketing automation software that helps marketing teams perform at their best.
